The War Memorial Gardens are one of the most famous wartime dedicatory gardens in Europe. Established as a dedication to the memory of 49,400 Irish soldiers who lost their life during the First World War of 1914 – 1918, the Gardens not only offer a unique memorial, but an interesting piece of architectural beauty.
Finished in 1938, and fully restored in 1988 after years of neglect, the Gardens feature the names of all Irish soldiers who gave their lives to the cause within the illustrated Harry Clarke manuscripts in the granite bookrooms.
The War Memorial Gardens has hosted a number of official commemorative ceremonies, most recently honouring the centenary celebrations of the end of the war in 2018 with a ceremony attended by notable dignitaries including President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins.
