LOCAL ATTRACTIONS #30: NATIONAL BOTANIC GARDENS

The National Botanic Gardens are a true beauty - a haven of over 20,000 living plants and flowers. The Botanic Gardens are famous for their planted glasshouse and its well-known Great Palm House and Turner Curvilinear Range. The Botanic Gardens has received an award for ‘excellence in conservation architecture’.

The Botanic Gardens was sold to the Irish Parliament in 1795. The original purpose of the gardens was to discover plants for agriculture and medicine. In 1845-1847, during the potato famine occurred in Ireland, the infection was first discovered in the gardens. Throughout the three years, extensive research was performed in the gardens to try stop the infection.

National Botanic Gardens
When walking around the National Botanic Gardens, visitors can take in the beautiful nature of the gardens by visiting the Herbaceous borders, rose garden, the alpine yard, the pond area, rock garden and arboretum. This attraction is definitely a place in which you should visit while staying in Dublin and especially with young kids as they can run wild and enjoy looking at the flowers.

Distance from West County
The National Botanic Gardens is situated just 9km from The West County Hotel, or a 22 minute drive. You can take the buses 26 from outside the hotel and get off at Stop 7453. When you get off stop you will walk for approx. 5 minutes until you get to Smithfield, Law Library. From outside the Law Library at Stop 1616 you will take the 83 or 83a bus towards Harristown. You will get off at Stop 151 Botanic Rd, Botanic Gardens, you will then walk approx. 3 mins to the National Botanic Gardens.
